The Snapshot Philosophy: What Your pH Reading Really Means

A vaginal pH reading describes the acidity level at the moment you measure. It helps to think of pH as a snapshot, not a diagnosis.

Understanding pH Values

The pH scale measures acidity and alkalinity on a spectrum:

  • Neutral: pH 7 (like pure water)
  • Acidic: Below 7 (e.g., some filtered or sparkling water)
  • Alkaline (Basic): Above 7 (most tap water, alkaline bottled water)

Normal Vaginal pH

A healthy vaginal pH typically ranges from 3.8 to 4.5, which is moderately acidic. This natural acidity is your body's primary defense system, creating an environment that protects against harmful bacteria and infections.

Why One Number Is Not the Whole Story

Your pH can vary for many reasons, including the time of day, your cycle phase, sexual activity, and hydration. Two readings taken on different days—or even different times of the same day—may not match exactly. This is completely normal.

What Matters Most

Patterns over time are often more meaningful than any single reading. BloomSense is designed to help you observe and record these changes, giving you the power of awareness rather than the anxiety of judgment.

Scientific Context

  • American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Vaginitis. Practice Bulletin No. 72. (2006). Confirms that a healthy vaginal ecosystem maintained by lactobacilli typically has a pH of 3.8–4.5.
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH). StatPearls: Bacterial Vaginosis. Defines the normal physiological vaginal pH range for reproductive-age women as 3.8 to 4.5.
